Argentinean artist Joaquín Aras is the winner of the 5th edition of the partnership offering artists’ residencies at Gasworks. The 2019/2020 Gasworks + URRA residencies are made possible by support from Erica Roberts and in partnership with arteBA Fundación, giving Argentinean and British artists the opportunity to participate in art residencies in London and Buenos Aires, respectively.
In the first edition of this alliance, the winners of the residency program were Nicolás Gullotta and Christian Newby, in the second edition The winners were Adriana Minoliti and Laura Eldret, in the third edition The winners Osías Yanov and Mariana Simnett and in their fourth year The recent edition of the winners were Pablo Accinelli and Adriana Arroyo.
About Joaquín Aras
He researches about narrative structures, film genres and their tropes to try to understand the ways fiction can move reality. Recently, his work focuses on the emotional space between audience and media and the aspect in which narrative experiences or events can preserve memory while challenging historicity. He studied Communication at UCA and the MA in Philosophy, Art and Critical Thought at EGS (Switzerland). He attended Programa de Artistas and Laboratorio de Cine programs at Di Tella University. He took workshops with Diana Aisenberg and Martín Bonadeo. He has done solo exhibitions at Isla Flotante (2012), La Ene Museum (2014), Móvil (2016), and York Film Theatre (2018); and group exhibitions at Fundación Klemm, Museo MACRO, Fotogalería del San Martín, MNBA (Bolivia), MNAV (Uruguay), Lund Konsthall (Suecia). His works were selected for Braque Prize, Bienal de Arte Joven de Bs. As., Bienalsur, and he won an honorable mention at the Klemm Prize. He was awarded scholarships by Fondo Nacional de las Arte, Telefónica Foundation, Oxenford Collection, and won the Plataforma Futuro Award. He was a resident artist at Molten Capital/M100 (Chile). He was selected for the CCA Kitakyushu Fellowship Program 2018-2019 (Japan). Since 2015 he teaches an experimental video class (Videodomo) in different places of Argentina.
